This Rally-Ready Lifted Toyota GR86 Is Street-Legal and Up for Sale
Kuhl Racing is set to unveil its GR86 Outroad next month, and Japanese customers will have the chance to place orders.
Sports cars aren’t typically meant for off-road adventures—at least, not intentionally. But manufacturers like Lamborghini and Porsche have changed that with their lifted, rugged supercars, such as the Huracan Sterrato and the 911 Dakar. Fans of niche models might also recall the Aixam Mega Track.
Now, a few tuners are joining the trend. The latest comes from Japan: Kuhl Racing has reimagined the Toyota GR86 into a rally-ready machine that looks like it could tackle a dirt stage at full throttle—and it absolutely delivers.
A Toyota GR86 Built for the Trail
Kuhl Racing’s GR86 Outroad transforms Toyota’s rear-wheel-drive coupe into a lifted, off-road-ready machine. The most noticeable upgrade is the increased ride height: a custom suspension raises the GR86 by about 3 inches. For even more clearance, an optional hydraulic lift system can boost it an additional 1.6 inches when needed, then lower it back down for everyday driving.
Visually, the GR86 Outroad is a far cry from the standard coupe. Aggressive fender flares widen the stance to accommodate larger tires, while redesigned front and rear bumpers improve approach and departure angles. Skid plates, protective cladding, and auxiliary lights give it a true rally-ready aesthetic, with roof rails rounding out the rugged look.
Under the hood, it keeps Toyota’s stock 2.4-liter flat-four engine, though Kuhl offers an optional turbocharger kit for those seeking extra performance. With upgrades like enhanced cooling and ECU tuning, the Outroad delivers noticeably more power. According to Kuhl, the turbo adds 50 horsepower to the standard 232, and buyers can opt for either a manual or automatic transmission.
Not Just a Concept
The best part? The GR86 Outroad isn’t just a showpiece. Kuhl Racing plans to offer it as a full conversion package for GR86 owners, with individual components also available for those who want to build their own customized version. Suspension, bodywork, wheels, brakes, and performance upgrades can all be mixed and matched depending on how extreme buyers want to go.
The complete Outroad package is priced at ¥4,150,000 ($26,600), assuming you already own a GR86. The body kit alone costs ¥1,771,000 ($11,800), while the wheels add ¥440,000 ($2,800). Opting for the turbocharger adds another ¥1,250,000 ($8,300) to the total.
Kuhl Racing will unveil the GR86 Outroad at next month’s Tokyo Auto Salon, with sales in Japan expected to begin later in 2026.
