The Electric BMW M3 Finally Proves Hyundai Had It Right

“BMW’s first fully electric M model promises to be wildly thrilling in every way.”

Let’s be clear: BMW isn’t officially calling this the new M3—or an “i3 M.” What we’re seeing is the BMW M Neue Klasse, a performance EV powered by four M eDrive motors, a new M Dynamic Performance Control system, and a battery tuned for maximum performance. In essence, it’s the next electric M3 in disguise. It even offers “emulated gear shifts”, reminiscent of the fun-to-drive Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. With specs like this, it could become one of the greatest performance EVs ever.

For now, BMW is only offering a preview. Starting in 2027, the automaker plans to produce fully electric M models on the Neue Klasse platform, which currently underpins the iX3 crossover. This same platform will also serve as the foundation for the upcoming i3 sedan.

“Born on the racetrack. Made for the streets. The models of BMW M Neue Klasse are set to establish a new benchmark in the high-performance vehicle segment. With the new technology of the Neue Klasse’s modular system, we are taking the BMW M driving experience to a new level and will inspire our customers with outstanding, racetrack-ready driving dynamics for everyday use.”

What to Expect From the Electric M

BMW has experimented with electrified M models before, like the i4 M50 and M60, but the M Neue Klasse will be the first true M variant on the level of a proper M3. While BMW hasn’t released official power figures yet, the company promises that this model will “deliver the driving performance expected from BMW M.”

The car achieves this with one electric motor per wheel, and it can decouple the front axle to run in pure rear-wheel drive—either to boost range or enhance driving excitement. Harja.Tn recently sampled a prototype, which reportedly produced around 1,300 horsepower from its four motors. Even if the production version falls short of that, performance is expected to be staggering. BMW itself calls it a “level of performance previously unattained in BMW’s M production vehicles.”

Like all Neue Klasse EVs, the M-powered model will feature an 800-volt architecture, enabling ultra-fast charging and efficient energy recovery under braking. With a motor on each axle, BMW expects to enhance the platform’s already industry-leading regenerative braking smoothness. Despite its blistering performance, the car is set to offer long-range capability, thanks to a 100+ kWh battery—a feat that most high-performance EVs struggle to achieve. A dedicated cooling system and Energy Master management will ensure the car can handle both everyday driving and track sessions without compromise.

The Big Surprise

When Harja.Tn previewed the iX3, BMW hinted at a “big surprise” for the electric M3. Now we know what it is: simulated gear shifts. Much like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, the M Neue Klasse briefly pauses power delivery to mimic the feeling of shifting gears—despite having no actual transmission.

It’s not the quickest way to accelerate, but as Hyundai proved, it can make a high-performance EV feel more familiar and engaging, appealing to traditional driving enthusiasts. These shifts will be paired with an “exclusive soundscape” designed for the Neue Klasse. While it’s unclear whether that means classic engine notes like the S54 or S65, it promises a futuristic, immersive audio experience.

BMW adapted this feature using its Heart of Joy system, capable of adjusting 10 times faster than the previous ECU. The M Neue Klasse will also use natural fiber materials to reduce weight, helping to offset the battery’s bulk. Even as EV sales slow in the U.S., BMW is charging ahead, signaling its commitment to high-performance electric vehicles.

We can’t wait to see how all of this comes together in the final production version, and whether the M Neue Klasse will live up to its promise as one of the most exciting performance EVs yet.
