Even Damaged, a BMW M4 CSL Outvalues a Pristine M4 Competition
"Not even a fallen tree can dent the value of the BMW M4 CSL."
In BMW circles, the letter M is legendary, representing Motorsport—the division responsible for crafting the ultimate “ultimate driving machines.” Even rarer and more revered are the letters BMW M4 CSL, which stand for Coupé Sport Leichtbau, with Leichtbau meaning “lightweight construction” in German. The first CSL appeared in 1973 with the BMW 3.0 CSL, famously known as the European Touring Car champion the “Batmobile.”
Since then, BMW has only used the CSL designation twice: first with the 2003 M3 CSL, and most recently in 2023 for the BMW M4 CSL. This special edition of the M4 Coupe, true to its name, shed weight and gained extra power. BMW produced a limited run of just 1,000 M4 CSLs, and one of its most notable features was its staggering price—starting at $139,900, a full $65,000 more than the rear-wheel-drive M4 Competition.
Now, as we approach the 2026 model year, more than four years after its debut, any hopes that the M4 CSL would have dropped in value on the used market have been dashed. Its price remains impressively high.
A Damaged M4 CSL Is Up for Sale

It’s perhaps unsurprising that one of the 1,000 M4 CSLs sold worldwide—typically purchased by buyers willing to spend six figures on a limited-run BMW coupe—has been involved in an accident. According to Dutch site Autoblog, a Netherlands-based owner crashed their BMW M4 CSL into a tree. The listing notes that the car is still drivable, but it suffered front-end body and suspension damage, and both the driver’s airbag and seatbelt tensioner deployed during the collision.
The vehicle is now listed for sale by SchadeAutos, and here’s the kicker: despite the heavy damage, the asking price is a staggering €87,500—roughly $102,000 at current exchange rates. While we’re not certified BMW mechanics, it’s safe to assume repairs will cost well into the five figures. For context, SchadeAutos also has a 2023 M4 Competition—which hasn’t hit a tree—listed for around $55,000.
What Makes the 2023 M4 CSL So Special?

For the M4 CSL, BMW trimmed the curb weight to 3,640 pounds, shedding 240 pounds compared to the standard M4 Competition. Power comes from an upgraded 3.0-liter inline-six, delivering 543 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque—an increase of 40 horsepower over the Competition. True to BMW tradition, it’s rear-wheel drive, though a manual transmission was not offered.
While its 0–60 mph time of 3.6 seconds and top speed of 191 mph might not seem revolutionary, the BMW M4 CSL truly shines on the track. It remains the fastest production BMW to lap the Nordschleife at the Nürburgring, recording an impressive 7:18.13.
