Range Rover Restomod: Where Vintage Meets Contemporary

“Disguised as a first-generation Range Rover, this Velvet Motorsports creation is actually built on a third-generation L322.”

Backdating is becoming increasingly popular, as car enthusiasts incorporate classic design elements into modern vehicles to create a blend of vintage style and contemporary features. While it’s often seen on cars like the Porsche 911, reimagined by Singer or Ruf, other models are now joining the trend. The latest example comes from Estonia, where Velvet Motorworks is transforming third-generation Land Rover Range Rover into 1970s-inspired restomods—without compromising any modern comfort or performance.

The SUV Every Gentleman Farmer Dreams Of

When it first debuted in 1970, the original Range Rover offered affluent rural drivers a more refined alternative to the rugged Land Rover Series models that had been around since the 1940s. Over the years, the Range Rover gradually moved upmarket, and today’s models rival the luxury and comfort of vehicles bearing Rolls-Royce or Maybach badges. Yet for many modern car enthusiasts, the ideal balance of style, capability, and character lies with the third-generation Range Rover—the L322—which debuted in 2002 and remained in production for a decade.

For fans of the L322 who appreciate its dependable performance and luxurious comfort—but want a touch more flair—Velvet Motorworks offers an enticing solution. The company plans to unveil a fully restored version of the third-generation Range Rover by the end of next year. In the meantime, they’re teasing enthusiasts with a series of 3D renderings that showcase the 2000s-era SUV reimagined with a striking retro-inspired design.

Blending Modern Performance with Classic Style

Every L322 restored by Velvet Motorworks will come equipped with a supercharged V8, delivering robust performance and a satisfying, throaty roar at full throttle. While the company hasn’t confirmed whether they’ll use the original 4.2-liter or 5.0-liter supercharged engines—which produced 395 and 503 horsepower respectively—or source crate engines from another manufacturer, it’s clear these restomods will be plenty quick. Each vehicle will also receive a modest lift and larger tires, enhancing off-road capability while giving the SUV a stance that nods to the classic Range Rover iconic silhouette

Drawing inspiration from the first-generation Range Rover, Velvet Motorworks will incorporate several retro design cues into the L322. These include a vertical-vane grille reminiscent of the 1970 model and two round headlights replacing the modern multi-element units. The higher-set front and rear bumpers also pay homage to the original SUV, though they give the custom Range Rover a slightly Bowler-like, rugged appearance rather than a purely classic look. Still, these design choices promise excellent ground clearance for serious off-road adventures.

Velvet Motorworks hasn’t shared renderings of the L322 restomod’s interior yet, but the company has confirmed it will combine classic and modern design elements. The cabin is expected to feature premium materials and luxurious leather trim, while contemporary amenities like Apple CarPlay and advanced safety features will come standard.

One-Off Designs, Built to Order

Velvet Motorworks aims to deliver its first custom L322 restomod by the end of 2026, with each vehicle tailored to the specifications of its individual owner. While pricing hasn’t been officially announced, a standard L322 Range Rover Supercharged typically sells for $25,000 to $40,000 in good to excellent condition. Factor in the usual “restomod” premium, and it’s likely that a Velvet Motorworks creation will easily surpass six figures.

While that price could buy a brand-new Range Rover, the ideal L322 buyer is unlikely to go that route—after all, a fresh-off-the-lot model lacks the vintage charm and character that make a restomod truly special.
