Mercedes-Benz Unveils the Ultimate Luxury Unimog with Power and Style
"This is serious—Mercedes isn’t kidding around."

The battle for supremacy in the off-road luxury market has escalated to extreme heights. Automakers are pulling out all the stops, and in a world crowded with Hummers, Raptors, and Range Rovers, only a truly over-the-top vehicle can dominate the field. Enter Mercedes-Benz—a trailblazer in this arena with its iconic G-Class and audacious creations like the AMG 6×6. Now, the brand may have crafted its ultimate contender: a high-end, powerhouse Unimog.
A Beast of an Engine
The Unimog has long been a cornerstone of Mercedes-Benz’s Special Trucks division, which will mark its 80th anniversary next year. Known for crafting rugged commercial trucks for agriculture, construction, and other heavy-duty tasks, the division’s crown jewel is undoubtedly the Unimog—renowned worldwide for its unmatched off-road prowess. It only makes sense that Mercedes would mark this milestone with a specially engineered, anniversary edition Unimog.
Mercedes teamed up with specialist upfitter Hellgeth Engineering, starting with the boxy, angular all-terrain U 4023 rather than the sleeker, more futuristic implement carrier version. From there, the goal was clear: boost power, enhance driver comfort, and elevate the overall experience—achieved through a new engine, redesigned bodywork, and a fully upgraded interior.
The most striking upgrade on the luxury Unimog is the engine swap. The standard U 4023 already packs a punch with its turbocharged 5.2-liter diesel four-cylinder, delivering 228 horsepower and a hefty 664 lb-ft of torque. But Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks went bigger—fitting a 7.7-liter turbodiesel inline-six that cranks out 295 hp and a monstrous 885 lb-ft of torque. All that power is routed through an automatic transmission, a selectable four-wheel-drive system with front, center, and rear differential locks, and the Unimog’s signature portal axles—ensuring it dominates any terrain it faces.
A Bold Look for a Modest Name
To match the newfound power, Mercedes and Hellgeth gave the U 4023’s boxy frame a serious visual upgrade. Massive, blocky end caps now anchor the front bumper, giving the truck a more aggressive, integrated stance. Rocker panels echo the design of the end caps and include built-in steps for easier access. At the rear, the truck bed features a sweeping fairing around the four-door cab, with sides that angle slightly toward the tail. Triangular cutouts in some panels add an extra touch of visual flair, making this Unimog as wild as it is capable.
Inside, the Unimog gets a full dose of upscale treatment. Quilted leather covers the seats, roof liner, and various panels, while ambient lighting adds a modern, sophisticated touch. The driver also benefits from a high-tech upgrade: digital cameras and monitors replace traditional exterior mirrors. Not only does this clean up the truck’s rugged exterior, but it also provides improved visibility around the massive vehicle.
For a truck this outrageous, it’s almost funny how understated its name is. Mercedes-Benz simply calls it the “luxury Unimog.” In a world where massive trucks often boast names inspired by dinosaurs, natural disasters, or other fearsome forces, the simplicity of Mercedes’ choice feels almost refreshingly humble.
