BMW Prepares to Unveil Shooting Brake Inspired by the Skytop Concept
Last year's Skytop concept appears to be getting a roof, with BMW set to unveil the finished shooting brake version at the Ville d'Este event this weekend.
BMW has teased a new shooting brake model in anticipation of this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.
According to Instagram posts from BMW and the company’s head designer, the new vehicle appears to be inspired by last year’s Skytop concept.
After the positive response to the Skytop at last year’s Villa d’Este, BMW announced a limited production of 50 Skytop units, suggesting that a similar approach might be taken for this new model.
Every year, Italy’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este brings together some of the world’s most iconic and expensive cars — along with the ultra-wealthy enthusiasts who can afford them. It’s the ideal stage for luxury automakers to debut high-end concept vehicles. That’s exactly what BMW did last year with the Skytop concept, and now the brand seems ready to repeat the move with a new shooting brake version.

BMW gave a sneak peek of the new model on its Instagram account, calling the car “dynamic, elegant, exotic.” The post features two images showcasing the same sleek, flowing bodywork and minimalist taillight design seen on the Skytop, now reimagined as a shooting brake.

If the Skytop is any indication, the new shooting brake model might also reach production. BMW plans to produce 50 units of the Skytop convertible. This model is heavily based on the M8 Competition and boasts around 617 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine.
Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW’s head of design and the visionary behind the Skytop’s aesthetics, also shared a preview of the shooting brake on Instagram. Although the image is somewhat blurry and lacks fine detail, it clearly highlights the new car’s sleek, low-slung silhouette.
With the 2025 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este set to take place this weekend, it’s quite possible that BMW plans to offer another 50 Skytop models to the affluent crowd gathering in Como, Italy. Regardless, we anticipate seeing many more detailed photos of the shooting brake by the end of the event.
BMW Group Classic will showcase a diverse lineup of 3 Series models at the event to celebrate 50 years of the iconic 3 Series badge. Additionally, the display will feature the 507 and 503 models, commemorating 70 years since their debut. The exhibition will also mark 70 years of the BMW Isetta—a car many hope will inspire a modern concept from the brand—and celebrate a century of the Rolls-Royce Phantom. The event runs from May 23 to 25.
