2025 Lexus IS500 Ultimate Edition First Look: Marks the End of the V-8 Era

Our beloved classic sports sedan receives fresh braking and styling updates — and we’re hoping it’s far from its final stop.

It’s remarkable that Lexus still offers the IS500 F Sport Performance, a high-powered variant of its otherwise conventional IS compact sport sedan. Originally introduced in 2022, this model features a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine producing 472 horsepower a rare breed in today’s world of turbocharging and electrification. With no turbos, superchargers, or hybrid assistance, this engine relies purely on classic combustion—air, fuel, and spark—to deliver thrilling performance in a compact four-door package. At a time when most rivals have transitioned to smaller, forced-induction engines or fully electric powertrains, the IS500 stands out as a defiant throwback. In a move that seems to celebrate this boldness, Lexus is releasing a special, limited run of 500 units called the 2025 Lexus IS500 Ultimate Edition.

The 2025 Lexus IS500 Ultimate Edition offers more than just cosmetic updates. Lexus has equipped it with serious performance upgrades, starting with larger 15.0-inch ventilated front brake rotors, red-painted six-piston Brembo calipers, and high-friction brake pads—replacing the standard IS500’s 14.0-inch, four-piston setup. Enhancing both form and function, the Ultimate Edition also rides on lightweight 19-inch forged aluminum BBS wheels, which take the place of the regular model’s Enkei alloys. Visually, the package is finished off with a striking new paint color exclusive to the IS lineup, dubbed “Wind”—a sleek, cool gray that pairs dramatically with the matte black BBS wheels.

Inside the cabin, the 2025 Lexus IS500 Ultimate Edition continues its distinctive theme with bold design touches. Red seatbelts, red accents on the gauges, and a matching analog dashboard clock help set it apart from the standard model. A serialized badge marks each vehicle’s place in the limited 500-unit run, adding a sense of exclusivity. Lexus also went the extra mile by programming a unique startup animation for the 8.0-inch digital gauge cluster—an often-overlooked detail that enhances the special-edition experience. The interior is finished in a Circuit Red and Black color scheme, featuring NuLuxe synthetic leather upholstery and suede-like trim across the seats and dashboard.

Lexus could paint the IS500 in bright purple and give the interior a matching green trim, and we’d still be excited about this unapologetically old-school sport sedan. While the IS500 F Sport Performance may not be the fastest in its class—it’s quick, but not blisteringly so—and its handling favors spirited road driving over track precision, it makes up for it with an abundance of character. In a segment crowded with technically impressive yet emotionally distant rivals, the IS500 stands out by delivering a visceral, engaging experience that connects with enthusiasts on a deeper level.

The IS500 Ultimate Edition retains the same 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 found in the standard IS500 F Sport Performance—no changes there. That means buyers can expect a robust 472 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque, delivered through a somewhat leisurely eight-speed automatic transmission, powering the rear wheels exclusively. The engine’s exhilarating soundtrack is a highlight, especially since its power peaks at higher RPMs, encouraging drivers to rev the V8 fully to experience its true performance character.

One lingering question remains: by naming this special edition the “Ultimate Edition,” is Lexus signaling the end of the IS500’s V-8 era? The IS model is approaching the end of its current generation, so this could very well be the final chapter for the naturally aspirated V-8 variant—though the standard IS500, still listed on Lexus’s website, hasn’t been officially discontinued for 2025. The same engine also continues to power the aging RC F coupe. That said, we sincerely hope Lexus keeps this spirited V-8 compact sport sedan alive a little longer, especially as competitors from BMW, Mercedes, and Audi have already moved on.
