2025 BMW X2 – Overview

The 2025 BMW X2 presents a sportier and more streamlined alternative to the traditional subcompact X1 SUV, featuring a sloping roofline that gives it a sleek, coupe-like profile. This design approach echoes the path BMW pioneered with the X6 back in 2008, which similarly transformed the boxy X5 SUV into a sportier model. Now in its second generation and freshly redesigned last year, the X2 continues to offer two turbocharged four-cylinder engine options, delivering 241 and 312 horsepower, respectively, along with standard all-wheel drive.

Although the X2’s exterior styling projects an aggressive and athletic presence, its driving dynamics are more composed and comfortable than ferocious. The top-tier M35i model, with its higher price point, overlaps in cost with the more performance-focused BMW X3. However, unlike many other SUVs with coupe-inspired designs, the X2 manages to balance style and practicality well. Its cargo space closely matches that of the boxier X1, though rear passengers will notice slightly reduced headroom due to the sloping roof.

BMW pioneered the coupe-style SUV segment, and many competitors—such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class and Range Rover Evoque—have since embraced this trend, offering their own sporty reinterpretations of traditional SUVs.

When Is The 2025 BMW X2 Coming Out?

The 2025 BMW X2 is expected to arrive in dealerships by late summer or early fall 2024. BMW typically unveils its new model year vehicles a few months before the calendar year rolls over, so expect to see official announcements, test drives, and dealer availability starting around August or September 2024.

With BMW’s usual refresh cycle, the 2025 model benefits from a mid-cycle update that adds new technology and tweaks styling to keep the X2 fresh and competitive.

    What’s New for 2025 BMW X2?

Following its comprehensive redesign last year, the 2025 BMW X2 sees only a few subtle updates. Heated front seats are now included as a standard feature, and buyers also receive a complimentary trial subscription for the vehicle’s built-in Wi-Fi hotspot.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The 2025 BMW X2’s price range starts at $44,025 and can climb up to $53,475, depending on the trim level and added options.

    Trim Starting MSRP (est.)
    xDrive28i
    $44,025
    M35i
    $53,475

The xDrive28i trim offers a strong value proposition with a generous list of standard features, including 19-inch wheels, a sizable infotainment screen, LED headlights, and active blind spot detection. While the X2’s bold and dynamic design might tempt buyers toward the high-performance M35i variant—which delivers a robust 312 horsepower and sportier styling details—our recommendation leans toward the more composed xDrive28i. Drawing from experience with a similarly equipped X1 M35i, we found the xDrive28i’s softer suspension and still-peppy handling make it a better fit as a versatile daily driver. Plus, its less powerful engine proved more than capable in both testing and everyday driving situations.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2025 BMW X2 xDrive28i is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine delivering 241 horsepower, paired with a smooth-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. On the sportier end, the M35i xDrive model serves as the high-performance variant, featuring upgraded engine components and increased boost pressure that boost output to a robust 312 horsepower.

Both engines experience a slight turbo lag, requiring a moment to spool up to full boost when the throttle is pressed aggressively. Standard all-season tires come fitted on all X2 models, with the M35i stepping up to larger 20-inch wheels for enhanced presence. The top speed for both variants is electronically limited to 130 mph when running on all-season tires; however, fitting performance summer tires allows the M35i to reach a higher top speed of 155 mph.

While cornering grip is adequate even on summer tires, it’s not exceptional, and the steering is notably precise though somewhat light on feedback. The xDrive28i offers a more comfortable and composed ride, making it better suited for everyday commuting, whereas the M35i delivers a more thrilling, aggressive driving experience at the expense of some ride comfort.

      0–60-MPH Times

During our testing, the BMW X2 xDrive28i accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, slightly slower than the closely related X1, which managed the sprint in 5.4 seconds. For comparison, the sportier X1 M35i we tested was notably quicker, reaching 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. We plan to conduct testing on the X2 M35i soon and will update this review with its official 0–60 mph time once available.

      Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The most fuel-efficient version of the 2025 BMW X2 is the xDrive28i, which carries EPA ratings of 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The sportier M35i model isn’t far behind, with fuel economy estimates just 1 mpg lower in both city and highway driving. In our real-world highway test at a steady 75 mph, the X2 xDrive28i actually exceeded expectations, achieving an impressive 35 mpg. For more detailed fuel economy information on the BMW X2, you can visit the EPA’s official website.

      Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The cabin of the 2025 BMW X2 shares many design elements with the boxier X1, though it offers slightly less headroom and cargo space due to its coupe-like roofline. Inside, the interior feels modern, upscale, and technology-driven. A floating center console separates the front seats and features a toggle-style gear selector. Below the console, a spacious cubby can fit a small bag, while a convenient storage bin at the base of the dashboard is ideal for holding a smartphone. Some models also include a wireless charging pad in this area for added convenience.

The M35i trim introduces a sportier vibe, offering available sport seats upholstered in either full leather or a blend of leather and faux suede for a more dynamic and premium feel. The rear seats fold down in a 40/20/40 split, expanding the cargo capacity to a maximum of about 51 cubic feet when folded flat, allowing for flexible storage options. Optional features such as remote start, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel further enhance comfort and convenience.

        Infotainment and Connectivity

Every 2025 BMW X2 is equipped with BMW’s distinctive large, curved digital instrument panel. This setup includes a 10.3-inch gauge cluster that displays speed and vital driving information, paired with a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen seamlessly integrated behind a single glass panel. The system comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing easy, cable-free smartphone integration.

Wireless smartphone charging is standard on the M35i xDrive and can be added to the xDrive28i through the optional Convenience package. For those who prioritize premium sound quality, the Harman Kardon audio system is available via the Premium package, delivering richer, more powerful audio with extra bass that fills the cabin and trunk—perfect for audiophiles who want their music to pack a punch.

          Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2025 BMW X2 includes a standard suite of essential driver-assistance technologies, such as automated emergency braking, to help enhance safety on the road. Additional advanced safety features are available as options. For detailed information on crash test results, you can visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

          Key Safety Features:

          • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection

          • Standard lane-departure warning to help prevent unintended lane drifting

          • Available adaptive cruise control equipped with lane-centering assistance for semi-autonomous highway driving

          Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The 2025 BMW X2 offers warranty coverage that’s fairly typical for the luxury compact SUV segment. BMW includes three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, which is a valuable benefit not commonly offered by competitors like Mercedes-Benz. However, if you expect to drive high mileage over several years, rivals such as the Lexus NX and Lincoln Corsair provide longer powertrain warranty coverage—extending two years beyond what BMW offers.

          BMW’s standard warranties include:

          • Limited warranty: 4 years or 50,000 miles

          • Powertrain warranty: 4 years or 50,000 miles

          • Complimentary scheduled maintenance: 3 years or 36,000 miles

Overall, the X2’s warranty and maintenance package is competitive but could be improved with extended coverage for long-term peace of mind.

If you want a luxury crossover that drives like a sport sedan and looks striking on the road, the 2025 BMW X2 deserves serious consideration.
