2021 Polestar 1 – Overview

The 2021 Polestar 1 stands out as one of the most striking plug-in hybrids on the road. This elegant 2+2 coupe serves as the flagship for Volvo’s performance-focused EV brand, Polestar, with a price tag exceeding $150,000 and a strict production limit of just 150 units per year.

Under the hood, the Polestar 1 delivers an impressive 619 horsepower and an all-electric range of 52 miles, showcasing the potential of its PHEV powertrain. However, driving enjoyment is slightly tempered by a synthetic steering feel and a firm suspension. The car’s electrified layout and substantial battery pack also eat into passenger and trunk space, limiting practicality.

Inside, the cabin reflects Volvo’s renowned design and material quality, but a vehicle at this price point would benefit from additional comforts such as power-adjustable steering column and thigh extensions for the seats. The absence of a sunshade for the expansive glass roof is another minor frustration.

Despite these shortcomings, the 2021 Polestar 1 remains a distinctive and compelling plug-in hybrid, combining performance, style, and exclusivity in a way few others can match.

The 2021 model marks the final year of Polestar 1 production, highlighted by an exclusive Special Edition limited to just 25 units worldwide. This edition features a striking matte gold exterior, with the theme carried through to the brake calipers and interior stitching, making it a truly standout collector’s model.

Unlike cars such as the Porsche 911, the Polestar 1 offers very limited customization. With only 1,500 units planned for global production, buyers can select from a range of wheel designs and exterior and interior color combinations—but that’s essentially it.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2021 Polestar 1 features a sophisticated plug-in hybrid setup. Up front, a turbo- and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine works alongside an electric motor to deliver 375 horsepower to the front wheels. At the rear, two additional electric motors, each producing 114 horsepower, power the rear wheels. Together, this system provides all-wheel drive with a combined output of 619 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.

In electric-only mode, propulsion comes exclusively from the rear wheels, while in gas-only mode, the front wheels take charge. Power is sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Polestar 1 rides on ultra-sticky 21-inch Pirelli P Zero tires and features an electronically controlled suspension, a torque-vectoring rear differential, and large Akebono brakes.

On the road, the car demonstrates remarkable agility, showing little to no understeer. Drivers can adjust the damper settings, though doing so requires lifting the rear end and opening the hood, and even then, the suspension struggles to fully soften the car’s firm ride.

      Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA rates the 2021 Polestar 1 at 58 MPGe with a combined city/highway rating and an estimated all-electric range of 52 miles—impressive figures for a plug-in hybrid. While this range places it near the top of its class, real-world efficiency will be evaluated during testing on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route as part of our comprehensive review process, visit the EPA’s website.

      Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The 2021 Polestar 1 interior is sleek, sophisticated, and closely related to its Volvo siblings, the S90 sedan and V90 wagon. The dashboard exudes luxury, blending carbon fiber accents with chrome trim, while premium leather upholstery comes standard.

The front seats, available in black or light gray, are supportive yet firm, offering comfort for two occupants. The rear seating, however, is tightly constrained—reminiscent of the Porsche 911—with limited legroom and a sloping roofline that makes the space feel cramped. Cargo capacity is also minimal, with the trunk holding just four cubic feet—smaller than even the compact Mazda MX-5 Miata’s luggage area.

        Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2021 Polestar 1 is equipped with an impressive array of modern technology. At the center is a vertically oriented touchscreen infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, angled toward the driver for intuitive use. Physical buttons and switches are minimal, contributing to the clean, modern cabin design.

A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster sits directly in front of the driver, complemented by a head-up display. The front row also offers two USB ports, and the Bowers & Wilkins audio system ensures premium sound quality. Polestar’s app, Polestar Connect, allows drivers to use their smartphone as a key, adjust climate settings, and lock or unlock the vehicle remotely, enhancing both convenience and connectivity.

          Safety and Driver-Assist Features

The 2021 Polestar 1 has not yet been evaluated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). However, it offers a range of advanced driver-assistance technologies. Among these is Pilot Assist, a system adapted from Volvo that combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centering to simplify highway driving. Additional features include blind-spot monitoring, a 360-degree camera for easier maneuvering in tight spaces, and front and rear parking sensors.

          Notable safety equipment includes:

          • Standard Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection

          • Standard Lane-departure warning paired with lane-keeping assist

          • Standard Adaptive cruise control with a semi-autonomous driving mode

          Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The 2021 Polestar 1 comes with standard industry warranties, though it does not include complimentary scheduled maintenance, unlike some Volvo models or BMW competitors.

          Coverage includes:

          • Limited warranty: 4 years or 50,000 miles

          • Powertrain warranty: 4 years or 50,000 miles

          • Hybrid components: 8 years or 100,000 miles

While the coverage is typical for the segment, owners should be aware that routine maintenance costs are their responsibility.
