Tracing Elon Musk’s statements is no easy task. According to records, the Tesla CEO announced during the company’s Q1 2024 earnings call that the long-awaited affordable EV—the one aimed at buyers hesitant about electric cars due to cost—was arriving sooner than expected. Shortly after, reports surfaced claiming the vehicle had been canceled, which Musk quickly denied, calling them false. However, it later emerged that the so-called affordable EV is essentially a pared-down version of the Model Y, which has yet to hit the market.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen appears ready to deliver what Musk couldn’t—or at least is actively working on it. In a social media post, Volkswagen’s design chief Andreas Mindt teased a rugged SUV that fans have been expecting: a budget-friendly electric high-rider based on the 2023 ID. 2all Concept. Even better, the vehicle is set to make its public debut on September 7, 2025, at IAA Mobility, formerly known as the Munich Motor Show.

A High-Riding ID. 2all Set for Reveal
Volkswagen ID. 2all Concept represents the automaker’s push into the budget EV segment, originally expected to launch this year. Positioned below the ID.3 and ID.4 in both size and price, the latest iteration is set to take the form of an SUV. Considering the popularity of crossovers and SUVs, this shift from a low-riding hatchback makes strategic sense. If this is what Volkswagen means by a “better-looking” ID. 2all, it’s a change many are likely to welcome.
Marked as a near-production concept, Volkswagen stopped short of officially naming the sketch teaser the ID. 2 SUV. However, its compact proportions are clear, exaggerated further by the oversized elements typical of show cars. The design echoes the ID. 2all hatchback but features a redesigned front fascia and a busier rear, reflecting its SUV influences. The production version is expected to adopt a more restrained style, though it likely won’t appear in its final form this week.
The Newest Member of the ID Family
The ID. 2 SUV—whether it ends up being called the ID. 2X or something else—will be built on Volkswagen MEB Entry platform. Based on the ID. 2all Concept, it’s expected to feature a front-wheel-drive setup with an electric motor producing up to 223 horsepower. The estimated range is around 280 miles, likely calculated using the more generous WLTP cycle.
In terms of pricing, the ID. 2all is expected to launch at around €25,000, making it one of the most affordable EVs in Europe—roughly $29,000 at current exchange rates. The SUV variant is projected to cost about €30,000 (around $35,000), positioning it below the ID.3 and ID.4. By comparison, the base Tesla Model Y Long-Range RWD currently starts at $44,990.
We’ll learn more about the newest member of the ID family in the coming days, but Volkswagen is also planning an even smaller model, the ID. EVERY1, which is expected to carry a price tag of around €20,000 (approximately $23,000).
