The 2026 Rivian R2 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated electric vehicles of next year. Positioned as a more accessible entry point to the Rivian lineup, the R2 will start around $45,000—significantly less than the larger R1T and R1S, which begin at $69,900 and $75,900, respectively.
Although deliveries are still some time away, Rivian is already putting the R2 through extensive testing. The company is focused on ensuring the smaller SUV can handle serious punishment, maintaining the brand’s reputation for rugged, adventure-ready EVs.
Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe recently shared a behind-the-scenes look at R2 testing via his personal Instagram account. In the video, the upcoming SUV is strapped to a shaker table—also known as a road simulator—designed to replicate the punishing vibrations of real-world driving conditions. With a playful caption that reads, “R2 at the gym!”, Scaringe highlighted the SUV’s suspension undergoing rigorous stress tests. Based on the footage, the R2 appears to be handling the simulated abuse with confidence.

Built to Withstand Real-World Abuse
While the larger and pricier R1T and R1S come equipped with air suspension systems, the more budget-friendly R2 forgoes this feature—likely a cost-saving measure to hit its $45,000 target. But that doesn’t mean the compact SUV sacrifices ride quality. Instead, Rivian has outfitted the R2 with a robust multi-link rear suspension paired with an isolated rear subframe, aiming to deliver a smooth and composed ride without the complexity or cost of adaptive air springs.
This sophisticated setup features five stamped steel links and Rivian’s distinctive “starfish” forged aluminum rear knuckles. These knuckles integrate bushings directly into their design, helping to reduce unsprung mass and improve overall suspension responsiveness.
As shown in the test footage, the machine subjects all four wheels to intense vibrations, yet the R2’s body remains remarkably stable. This indicates that when the vehicle tackles rough terrain like dirt or gravel roads, much of that harshness will be absorbed by the suspension—minimizing intrusion into the cabin and ensuring a more comfortable ride for passengers.
What to Expect from the Rivian R2
Rivian has been gradually unveiling new glimpses of the upcoming R2, building anticipation for what promises to be a major milestone for the brand. While complete pricing details have yet to be released, Rivian has confirmed that the R2 will be available in single-, dual-, and tri-motor variants, with the entry-level single-motor version expected to start around $45,000.
The R2 will ride on Rivian’s next-generation Midsize Platform, which is designed to deliver over 300 miles of driving range and fast-charging capability from 10 to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes.
More than just a new product, the R2 could represent a turning point for Rivian’s business. In 2024, the company sold 51,579 vehicles—far below Tesla’s 459,000 units produced in just the fourth quarter. By introducing a more affordable EV to its lineup, Rivian aims to follow a similar path to success as Tesla did with the Model 3 and Model Y, tapping into a much broader customer base.
