New-Generation BMW X5 Promises to Please Across the Board

BMW is reportedly planning multiple new powertrains for the next-gen X5 SUV, not just an EV.

Prototypes of the all-new, fully electric next-generation BMW X5 SUV have been spotted testing, offering early glimpses of the upcoming Neue Klasse design language. Recent reports suggest that select electric trims could deliver over 700 horsepower. Alongside the EV, BMW plans to offer a mild hybrid version powered by a gas V8 engine, catering to traditional enthusiasts who prefer combustion engines.

Next-Gen X5 Promises Impressive Power Across All Variants

According to BMW Blog (though sources remain unnamed), the upcoming G65 gas-powered V8 X5 will be offered alongside the all-electric G95 EV. The new model is expected to feature an updated version of the current S68 4.4-liter V8 engine, combined with an integrated hybrid system. At least one gas-powered variant is rumored to deliver more power than the current X5 M’s 617 horsepower.

It remains uncertain—and somewhat unlikely—that BMW will offer a purely gas-powered V8 version of the next-generation X5 in certain markets. Instead, the new 48-volt mild hybrid system is expected to come in multiple tuned variants, designed to match or surpass the current X5 M60i and X5 M power levels. Meanwhile, the next-gen electric X5 will likely fill the lower trim positions with its own range of performance options. For reference, the all-electric 2026 BMW iX, which shares similar dimensions with the current gas-powered X5 but is more street-focused, is available in 402-hp xDrive45, 536-hp xDrive60, and 650-hp M70 trims. The upcoming X5 EV is anticipated to feature even more advanced next-generation technology.

The Neue Klasse Design Language Is Making a Swift Return

BMW’s iconic Neue Klasse design language is set to reappear on the next-generation X5, even though it will be built on an older platform. That said, the brand-new look and cutting-edge EV technology will debut first on the forthcoming i3 electric 3 Series sedan and the iX3, which will replace the current electric X3 SUV. According to BMW Blog, BMW is also considering developing an M performance version of the new iX3.

The report states that the gas-powered G65 X5 is slated to enter production in August 2026, with the all-electric G95 X5 EV following in late 2027 or 2028. Both models will be built on BMW’s CLAR platform, which will also underpin next-generation versions of the X6 and X7 SUVs. An X6 M variant is expected as well, though details on the powertrains for the new X6 and X7 remain undisclosed. BMW is likely to maintain at least one gas-powered trim in key markets like the U.S. for as long as possible. However, the new mild hybrid V8 powertrain probably won’t be offered in Europe, where BMW has already phased out most V8 engines—though that policy could change in the future.
