Maserati Quattroporte Set to Go Hybrid in Revival Bid

"Maserati’s Flagship Quattroporte May Be Revived as a Plug-In Hybrid"

Maserati is reportedly preparing to add a plug-in hybrid option to its lineup as it aims to offer a broader range of powertrains to meet evolving customer needs. If the move is confirmed, the Maserati Quattroporte luxury sedan is expected to be the first model to feature the new electrified setup, serving as a flagship example of Maserati’s transition toward more sustainable performance.

At present, Maserati offers three distinct powertrains across its lineup. The twin-turbocharged V6 powers models like the MC20 and Ghibli, while a mild-hybrid turbocharged four-cylinder is found in the Grecale. Meanwhile, the brand’s fully electric technology is showcased in the GranTurismo Folgore and Grecale Folgore.

According to a report from Autocar, Maserati CEO Santo Ficili explained that introducing a plug-in hybrid would help the brand “stay in touch with [its] customers” while progressing toward full electrification. Interestingly, despite plans to go all-electric by 2030, Maserati is still considering the development of a new V8 for limited-edition models and could even reintroduce a manual transmission—something the brand hasn’t offered in nearly 20 years.

“We need to stay connected with our customers, especially now, as many are feeling uncertain,” Ficili said. “You can imagine the confusion—PHEV, BEV, mild hybrid… It’s a lot to take in. That’s why maintaining a dialogue is so important.”

How Maserati Might Approach PHEV Development

Since Maserati’s existing platforms weren’t designed with hybridization in mind—the aging M156 architecture, for instance, was specifically built for the sixth-generation Quattroporte back in 2013—it’s likely the brand will turn to Stellantis’ more adaptable platforms. In particular, the STLA Large platform, which will underpin the upcoming Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Giulia, could serve as the foundation for Maserati’s next-generation plug-in hybrids.

A possible collaboration between Alfa Romeo and Maserati could pave the way for plug-in hybrid versions of both the Quattroporte and Maserati’s top-selling Levante SUV. However, in the Autocar report, CEO Santo Ficili stressed the importance of maintaining the unique identities of both brands—even if their PHEV flagship models share the same underlying architecture.

An All-Electric Quattroporte Folgore Is Still in the Works

This partnership could be vital for Maserati, especially when it comes to sharing the high research and development costs of a new electrified powertrain. Originally, an all-electric Quattroporte was slated to debut this year, but its launch has been postponed due to supplier issues, R&D expenses, and the company’s commitment to ensuring “zero risk on the performance level.”

Development of the all-electric Quattroporte is currently paused, not canceled, with the Folgore model still anticipated to join Maserati’s EV lineup by 2028 as the brand’s third electric vehicle. The Quattroporte Folgore is rumored to showcase a striking new design emphasizing aerodynamic efficiency. While technical specifications remain unconfirmed, it’s expected to feature larger battery packs capable of delivering up to 500 miles of driving range. Additionally, powerful electric motors on both axles could generate as much as 1,000 horsepower in a future high-performance Trofeo variant.
