Lucid Gravity Faces Disappointing Sales Numbers
Lucid Struggles Early, Expects Stronger Sales in Second Half of the Year.

A new report claims Lucid Motors has sold just nine units of its highly anticipated Gravity SUV — a surprising figure given SUVs typically outsell cars by a wide margin. Lucid, however, is pushing back, calling the number “simply not credible.” While the automaker hasn’t disclosed the actual sales tally, its statements hint that Gravity deliveries are still falling short of internal targets.
Did Lucid Really Only Sell 9 SUVs?
The claim originates from S&P Global Mobility and was reported by Automotive News. S&P bases its figures on vehicle registration data sourced from government databases. Since newly purchased vehicles must be registered before hitting the road, this method offers a way to estimate sales when automakers choose not to release their own figures.
In a statement to HARJA, Lucid dismissed the report, saying, “The recent claims that Lucid has only delivered nine Gravity SUVs is completely inaccurate. A quick review of social media postings from our customers shows that those numbers are simply not credible.”
In our own quick five-minute scan of social media, we found over 10 owners claiming they received their Gravity SUVs before July 1 — and we stopped counting there — which supports Lucid’s pushback. The gap between these findings and S\&P’s figure could stem from a surge of late-June deliveries or delays in registration data. Still, Lucid’s defense doesn’t necessarily mean Gravity sales are meeting expectations.
Lucid says it has delivered “well into the 3-digit range” of Gravity SUVs — a vague figure that still means fewer than 1,000 units. For a model expected to move in much higher volumes, this suggests buyers are either hesitant or facing barriers to purchase. The company doesn’t break out Gravity sales from its Air sedan, but second-quarter deliveries totaled 6,418 vehicles. According to S\&P’s data, 4,780 of those were Air registrations, up a healthy 52% year-over-year, leaving 1,629 vehicles unaccounted for — at least some of which were evidently Gravity SUVs.
Production Issues Blamed, But Now Resolved
Even at 999 units, Gravity sales remain below Lucid’s expectations. On its August 5 earnings call, interim CEO Marc Winterhoff acknowledged that manufacturing delays forced the company to lower its production forecast, stating, “I feel that it is important to acknowledge that we are not where we want to be with Lucid Gravity production relative to our target at this point in the year.” He attributed the slowdown to supply chain constraints but added that most issues have now been resolved, with production set to ramp up in the second half of the year.
Although Lucid doesn’t break down production targets between the Air and Gravity, the company projects a total output of 18,000 to 20,000 vehicles for the year. For the second half, it expects the Gravity SUV to make up the majority of both production and deliveries.
Based on Lucid’s first-half performance, the company could produce up to 14,000 vehicles in the second half of the year. If more than half of those are Gravity SUVs, the model could have a strong debut, potentially matching or exceeding projected sales for EVs like the Tesla Model X, Mercedes-Benz EQS, and Cadillac Escalade IQ. Still, Lucid has a long road ahead to reach those numbers.
Regardless of the exact figures, the Gravity doesn’t appear to be lingering on dealer lots. The three-row SUV, offering up to 450 miles of range and 828 horsepower, shows zero inventory across Lucid’s U.S. stores.
