Lincoln Seeks New SUV Alternative Outside of China

Plans to develop an electric vehicle have been abandoned.

Lincoln sales jumped nearly 31% last quarter, driven by the completely redesigned Nautilus, which sold 9,869 units in Q2 2025. The boost comes as welcome news for the brand, as the Nautilus represents a fresh direction with its all-new interior design language.

However, there’s a catch: the Nautilus is manufactured in China, leaving it vulnerable to tariffs. With the brand’s recent decision to step back from electric vehicle development, Lincoln dealers are now facing a gap in the lineup and will be hoping for new models produced outside China.

According to a new report from Automotive News, Lincoln has assured dealerships that a new model is on the way. This vehicle is expected to replace the previously planned electric three-row crossover, which was initially slated for release this year, then delayed to 2027, before ultimately being canceled.

What Is This New Nameplate?

Lincoln already offers a three-row SUV, the Aviator, but it isn’t among the brand’s top sellers. The 2025 Aviator received a modest facelift, dropping the hybrid option, upgrading to a larger touchscreen, and making BlueCruise hands-free driving standard.

Lincoln-2

Despite these updates, the Aviator lacks the striking Lincoln Digital Experience featured in the Nautilus and Navigator, as it’s built on an older platform. A full redesign for the Aviator isn’t expected until 2030, following the launch of the next-generation Ford Explorer.

This all-new Lincoln nameplate could set itself apart from the Aviator by being larger and possibly based on a front-wheel-drive platform—similar to how Lexus offers both the GX and TX as three-row SUVs. A hybrid powertrain is likely, though it could also adopt a range-extended electric vehicle (EREV) setup, akin to the Ram REV and Scout. Ford has previously discussed using EREV technology in pickup trucks, so it may soon make its way into the Lincoln lineup to address range concerns. Beyond these possibilities, details about the new model, including its production location, remain unknown.

Lincoln’s Lineup Is In Flux

Lincoln has started 2025 on a strong note, with sales up nearly 31% in Q2 and 12.8% for the first half of the year. Much of that growth came from the Nautilus, which remains the brand’s top seller despite being assembled in China. Nautilus sales increased more than 19% in Q2 and nearly 6% year-to-date, while the Navigator saw an even bigger surge, jumping nearly 115% in Q2 and over 74% for the first half of 2025.

Even some of Lincoln’s older models, like the Aviator and Corsair, saw sales gains. However, the Corsair is slated for discontinuation as Ford prepares the Louisville Assembly Plant—which also produces the Ford Escape—for EV production in 2027. It’s likely Lincoln will introduce a replacement, as the Corsair accounts for nearly 24% of the brand’s total sales.
