China’s Electric GT-R-Inspired Four-Door Surprises With Unexpected Power
The all-new sports sedan is set to make its debut at the Guangzhou Auto Show later this year.
XPeng introduced the P7 in China back in 2020 as a fully electric executive sedan, positioning it as a direct rival to the Tesla Model 3 and featuring an advanced autonomous driving assistance system. Now, XPeng has unveiled the latest version of the P7, showcasing a bold new design crafted by Exterior Lead Designer Rafik Ferrag that transforms the sedan into a sleek four-door supercar lookalike. But the updates go beyond aesthetics — the new XPeng P7 also boasts innovative butterfly doors along with enhanced performance and cutting-edge technology improvements.
Recently, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) published a new regulatory catalog unveiling key details about the upcoming XPeng P7. According to the information, the standard model’s rear motor will deliver 363 horsepower powered by a lithium iron phosphate battery pack. Meanwhile, the long-range single-motor version produces the same horsepower but is equipped with a Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) battery pack.
More Power with Dual Motors
The third variant is the high-performance model, equipped with a dual-motor setup that adds a front motor producing 223 horsepower, bringing the total output of the XPeng P7 to an impressive 586 horsepower. This version runs on an NMC battery pack and features enhanced braking with striking orange Brembo calipers. To reduce weight and boost performance, it also incorporates carbon fiber elements such as wing mirrors and small body panels behind the front wheels. For superior traction, the performance model offers 20- and 21-inch wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires.
The new XPeng P7 is expected to weigh approximately 4,600 pounds, varying slightly by model. It features an extended wheelbase of 118.4 inches, likely to provide increased rear legroom for passengers. The sedan measures 197.5 inches in length, 77.5 inches in width, and stands 56.2 inches tall. On the design front, Exterior Lead Designer Rafik Ferrag—who also crafted the original P7—has leveraged his experience from Citroën and Honda to deliver a fresh, refined look for this latest iteration.
Price Expected to Match Performance
XPeng has previously indicated that the new P7 will be priced around 300,000 yuan, roughly $41,600. While it’s unlikely the model will be offered in the U.S. market, XPeng remains eager to expand the P7’s presence internationally. The company initially targeted Norway—where electric vehicles accounted for 90% of new car sales in 2024—but despite the promising market, XPeng managed to sell only a few hundred units in its first year there.
In Singapore, XPeng has seen notable success, reportedly matching Tesla’s sales figures in the market. Building on that momentum, the company recently launched dealerships in Malaysia. In 2024, XPeng expanded its European presence by entering Germany, offering the P7 at a price point below that of the Tesla Model 3 Long Range, aiming to attract more buyers in the region.
