2025 Volkswagen ID.4 Review

MSRP: $41,420 – $58,720

2025 Volkswagen ID.4 – Overview

The 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV features a clean, modern design and a roomy interior. Slightly shorter and lower than the gas-powered Volkswagen Tiguan, the ID.4 offers respectable performance and a practical electric range.

The base model, a 201-horsepower single-motor with rear-wheel drive, delivers up to 206 miles of EPA-estimated range. Upgrading to the mid-level 282-horsepower single-motor rear-drive version with the larger battery increases range significantly to 291 miles per charge. For drivers seeking more power, the 335-horsepower dual-motor all-wheel-drive ID.4 uses the same larger battery to offer stronger performance with 263 miles of range.

Although the ID.4 has been on the market for a few years, it supports DC fast charging—albeit not as quickly as newer rivals like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Ford Mustang Mach-E. Its competitive pricing makes it one of the more affordable electric SUVs, though the newly introduced Chevrolet Equinox EV presents fresh competition in terms of cost.

When Is the 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 Coming Out?

Volkswagen began arriving with 2025 ID.4s in many markets during the auto show / model-year ramp-up period. Some of its updates were anticipated after the 2024 mid-cycle refresh, and these carry over into the 2025 lineup.

In short: it’s already available (or will become so imminently) in many markets as a 2025 model, rather than being a future release.

    What’s New for 2025 Volkswagen ID.4?

After major updates in 2024—including a revamped infotainment system, upgraded software, and improved performance—the 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 introduces mostly minor enhancements. All models equipped with the 58.0-kWh battery now come standard with a 12.9-inch touchscreen featuring backlit sliders. S trims with this battery pack also receive ventilated front-row seats as standard.

For added style, S and S Plus models can be upgraded with the Black Package, which darkens the mirror caps, door handles, badges, and 20-inch aluminum wheels. Additionally, S Plus models gain an auto-dimming driver’s side door mirror for extra convenience.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 starts at $41,420, with fully equipped models topping out around $58,720, depending on trim and options.

    Trim Starting MSRP (est.)
    Limited
    $41,420
    Pro
    $46,520
    S Limited
    $46,520
    Pro S
    $51,620
    Pro S Plus
    $58,720

While the new Standard model is the most affordable, the mid-range rear-wheel-drive Pro trim is our recommended choice for balancing range and features. It offers the longest practical range and supports faster DC fast-charging at public stations. For those seeking extra power and traction, the Pro is also available with all-wheel drive, providing a boost in performance without significantly reducing driving range.

    EV Motor, Power, and Performance

The 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 powertrain varies by model. The single rear-mounted motor paired with the smaller 58.0-kWh battery produces 201 horsepower, while the top-tier dual-motor all-wheel-drive model with the larger 77.0-kWh battery delivers 330 horsepower.

Regenerative braking recaptures energy during deceleration, though the one-pedal driving experience that many EV drivers enjoy is limited—even in the ID.4’s most aggressive regen setting. Acceleration lacks the typical “instant torque” punch found in many electric vehicles. Handling isn’t as sharp as some competitors, but the ID.4 shines in ride comfort, offering a smooth, refined drive and a quiet cabin that makes daily commuting pleasant.

      0–60-MPH Times

The base rear-wheel-drive 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 isn’t slow by traditional compact crossover standards, but its estimated 7.3-second sprint to 60 mph highlights a more relaxed pace compared with quicker EV rivals. The 282-horsepower rear-wheel-drive model delivers improved acceleration, while the dual-motor all-wheel-drive version significantly sharpens performance. In our testing, the more powerful AWD model reached 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds, showcasing its capability for drivers seeking a more spirited drive.

      Range, Charging, and Battery Life

For 2025, EPA-estimated range varies by battery and drivetrain. Models with the larger 77.0-kWh battery achieve 263 miles with all-wheel drive and 291 miles with rear-wheel drive. In real-world testing, the AWD version delivered around 240 miles of range. The base 58.0-kWh battery offers an EPA estimate of 206 miles, which falls short of some competitors like the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV.

Charging is flexible: the ID.4 can be recharged at home using standard 110-volt or 240-volt outlets, and it also supports DC fast-charging for quicker top-ups at public stations.

      Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

On our 75-mph highway test, the all-wheel-drive 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 achieved 91 MPGe. The updated rear-wheel-drive model has not yet been tested, but we will update this page with results once available.

It’s important to note that EPA range estimates can sometimes overstate or understate real-world highway efficiency for electric vehicles. For the latest official fuel-economy ratings, visit the EPA’s website.

      Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 cabin combines a modern, tech-focused design with a sense of spaciousness and practicality. Ambient lighting adds a touch of style, while the layout remains uncluttered and user-friendly. Standard cloth front seats are heated, but upgrading to the Pro S trim brings faux-leather upholstery, 12-way power-adjustable front seats, and a memory function for added comfort.

Cargo space is generous for the segment. Behind the rear seats, the ID.4 can accommodate eight carry-on suitcases, and folding the rear seats expands the capacity to 26, making it a practical choice for road trips and daily errands alike.

        Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 comes standard with a 12.0-inch touchscreen, while an optional 12.9-inch display adds backlit controls for volume and climate settings. The infotainment system reflects Volkswagen’s latest interface, though it can feel a bit fussy in everyday use. Standard features include built-in navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

All models also feature a 5.3-inch reconfigurable digital gauge display and voice-recognition functionality, providing drivers with easy access to key vehicle information and controls.

          Final Verdict

The 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it refines a balanced formula. It’s not the sportiest EV, yet it’s comfortable, practical, and tech-forward enough to appeal to many buyers who want an EV without pushing into premium pricing. If your priority is range, usability, and value over outright performance, the ID.4 remains a strong choice in the compact electric SUV space.
