2025 Ford Mustang – Overview

Now in its second year of the seventh generation, the 2025 Ford Mustang continues the legacy it began in the 1960s: delivering a distinctly American take on the sporty coupe. Variety remains central to its appeal, with the lineup ranging from a 315-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder to a 480-hp 5.0-liter V-8—and the even more aggressive 500-hp Mustang Dark Horse. Both V-8 models offer an optional six-speed manual transmission in place of the standard 10-speed automatic, while the turbo four is automatic-only.

The 2025 Mustang retains the classic fastback coupe and soft-top convertible body styles, and the brand’s tradition of special editions continues with the 60th Anniversary Edition. Limited to 1,965 units to commemorate its 1965 debut (though it actually went on sale in April 1964 as a 1965 model), this edition captures the Mustang’s enduring spirit.

True to its heritage, the Mustang delivers stylish, performance-oriented transportation for two—or a tight four if passengers don’t mind the compact rear seats. With the Chevrolet Camaro discontinued and the Dodge Challenger transitioning to inline-six or electric powertrains, the Mustang stands as the last V-8–powered domestic pony car.

When Is the 2025 Ford Mustang Coming Out?

The 2025 Ford Mustang is expected to arrive at dealerships in late 2024, giving enthusiasts a chance to test-drive the latest generation before the new year. Pre-orders are typically open a few months prior to the official release, so interested buyers should check local dealers for availability.

What’s New for 2025 Ford Mustang?

Since the seventh-generation Mustang debuted in 2024, the 2025 model year brings more of a celebratory touch than a complete redesign. The standout addition is the 60th Anniversary Edition, exclusive to GT coupes and convertibles. It features eye-catching cosmetic details, including 20-inch wheels with striking red aluminum center caps, paying tribute to Mustang’s storied past.

Alongside the anniversary edition, Ford is introducing a nostalgic twist for tech enthusiasts: a throwback digital gauge cluster inspired by the classic 1967 Mustang instrument panel. Even better, this retro-style display is available via an over-the-air update for all 2024 and newer Mustangs, letting owners blend modern technology with vintage flair.

While the turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost delivers respectable performance, the real thrill comes with the V-8. We recommend the Mustang GT coupe, especially paired with the six-speed manual transmission. Yes, it costs about $10,000 more than the four-cylinder, but as the saying goes, buy experiences, not things—and the GT delivers both power and pure driving enjoyment.

For those seeking even more performance, the GT Performance Package is worth considering at roughly $5,000 extra. It adds 19-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, a 3.73-geared Torsen limited-slip differential, and a range of visual upgrades, making it a compelling option for enthusiasts who want a sharper, more aggressive Mustang experience.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2025 Ford Mustang kicks off with a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, producing 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, paired exclusively with a 10-speed automatic transmission. While slightly down from the last generation’s 330-hp EcoBoost Performance model, it still offers solid performance for everyday driving.

For enthusiasts, the 5.0-liter V-8 is the true heartbeat of the Mustang. Rated at 480 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, it can be paired with either the 10-speed automatic or, for a more engaging experience, a six-speed manual. Opting for the performance exhaust bumps output slightly to 486 hp and 418 lb-ft.

Taking things further, the Mustang Dark Horse serves as a track-focused evolution of the beloved Mach 1. Its 500-hp V-8 comes standard with adaptive dampers and 19-inch Pirelli P Zero PZ4 tires, while an optional handling package adds grippier Pirelli Trofeo RS track-ready rubber. Across the board, Ford has refined the Mustang’s ride and handling with each generation, improving steering feel, responsiveness, and overall balance. The Dark Horse’s adaptive dampers help tame the aggressive nature of track-focused tires, making it surprisingly manageable on the street while still delivering exhilarating performance on the track.

      0–60-MPH Times

On our test track, the 2025 Ford Mustang GT equipped with the performance exhaust sprinted to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, while the EcoBoost wasn’t far behind at 4.5 seconds. The Mustang Dark Horse shaved just a fraction off the GT’s time, hitting 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, but it truly showed its muscle over longer runs, completing the quarter-mile in 12.5 seconds at 115 mph.

The Dark Horse also impressed in our 0–150–0 speed test, finishing in 29.7 seconds, outperforming rivals like the Toyota Supra 3.0 and demonstrating that it’s not just fast in a straight line—it’s a well-rounded performer with serious track credentials.

      Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA estimates the 2025 Ford Mustang EcoBoost at 22 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. Adding the optional Performance Package slightly reduces efficiency to 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.

The V-8 Mustang sees modest improvements over the last generation, with the automatic-rated at 16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. Opting for the six-speed manual drops both figures by 1 mpg. The Dark Horse, being more track-focused, carries EPA estimates of 14 mpg city and 22 mpg highway, regardless of transmission.

In real-world testing, a GT with a six-speed manual returned 24 mpg on a 75-mph highway run, while the EcoBoost automatic delivered 32 mpg, showing that the four-cylinder can provide a solid balance of performance and efficiency. For official figures, visit the EPA’s website.

      Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The 2025 Ford Mustang interior blends modern tech with retro flair. Seats are supportive, and the standard 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster is a major step up from the previous generation. The configurable display allows drivers to personalize colors, gauges, and layouts—even offering a “calm” mode that shows only essential information.

For nostalgia enthusiasts, the cluster can mimic the 1987 Mustang’s analog gauges, while a second retro-inspired screen, evoking the 1967 Mustang, is available via an over-the-air update for all seventh-generation models. Ambient lighting and the driver’s display also adjust according to the selected drive mode, enhancing both style and usability.

Trim levels affect materials and finishes: base Mustangs feature cloth seats with optional micro-suede vinyl inserts, the Premium adds stitched accents from door trim to dashboard, and the GT receives leather inserts.

Ford also offers the Remote Rev feature, letting you fire up the engine and rev it from outside the car using the key fob—perfect for showing off the Mustang’s signature roar.

        Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2024 redesign brought significant tech upgrades to the Mustang’s cabin, carried over into 2025. An available 13.2-inch infotainment screen using Ford’s Sync 4 system stretches gracefully from the gauge cluster toward the center console beneath a sleek curved glass panel. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, while an optional wireless smartphone charger keeps the cabin free of cable clutter.

Voice control is a highlight, with Amazon Alexa and Ford+ Streaming letting drivers issue commands without touching a button or knob. Every Mustang also includes Ford Power-Up software capability, enabling over-the-air updates to improve software and vehicle functionality over time.

          Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The 2025 Ford Mustang offers a solid but standard warranty package. Unlike some competitors, Ford does not include complimentary scheduled maintenance. Coverage details include:

          • Limited warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles

          • Powertrain warranty: 5 years or 60,000 miles

          • Scheduled maintenance: not included

This level of coverage aligns with most American sports cars, providing reassurance for major components while leaving routine maintenance the owner’s responsibility.
