2026 BMW X6 M Review

MSRP: $133,275

The 2026 BMW X6 M, a more stylish counterpart to the X5 M, brings the same sports-car-level performance but with a sleek, sloped-roof design that matches its high-performance character. Beneath the X6 M’s aggressive hood sits a 617-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 engine, engineered for maximum performance. Remarkable acceleration is just one of the many thrilling features of this super SUV. It also delivers handling that defies expectations, thanks to a finely tuned suspension system and the almost flawless balance of its chassis. While the X6 M’s aerodynamic shape certainly turns heads more than the boxier X5 M, this comes at a price, including reduced rear passenger headroom, less cargo space, and a higher price tag.

Pros

Cons

  • Engaging driving dynamics
  • Good headroom despite low roofline
  • Smooth, powerful engines
  • Mechanically identical X5 is less expensive
  • No plug-in hybrid option
  • Tough-to-reach window controls

What’s New for 2026

While the 2026 X6 M retains the core attributes of its predecessor, it introduces subtle design tweaks and technological enhancements. The integration of the latest iDrive system ensures a more intuitive user experience, while the M xDrive system has been fine-tuned for improved handling dynamics.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The 2026 BMW X6 M starts at a base price of $133,275.

While it may be surprising that the more stylish, sloped-roof X6 M comes at a higher price than the more practical X5 M, the extra cost is justified by its eye-catching design and superior performance. For those who appreciate the unique appeal of the X6 M, the price tag is well worth it, even if it sacrifices some practicality. As of 2024, all X6 M models are the Competition variant, coming fully equipped with a range of standard performance and luxury features. These include an adaptive M suspension, 21-inch front wheels, 22-inch rear wheels, a panoramic sunroof, a Harman Kardon audio system, a drive recorder, and an array of safety technologies.

For those seeking a more luxurious setup, consider adding the $3,100 Executive Package. This upgrade adds premium features such as soft-close automatic doors, LED lighting for the panoramic roof, heated and cooled cupholders, front ventilated massaging seats, front and rear heated seats, and rear manual side window shades—making the X6 M even more indulgent.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The X6 M is powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine, paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This system integrates an electric motor within the eight-speed automatic transmission. Together, they deliver the same impressive 617 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque as the previous non-hybrid Competition models. While we have not yet subjected the hybridized version to our standard performance tests, we expect its performance to either match or surpass that of earlier versions.

During a previous test drive of the X6 M Competition, we praised its lightning-fast acceleration, exceptional cornering grip, and powerful, fade-resistant braking system. Although it offered a smooth ride on highways, the large wheels and firm suspension contributed to a jarring experience on rougher roads. A standout feature is the drivetrain’s versatility: it allows power to be distributed to all four wheels for maximum traction, or most of it can be sent to the rear for sharper handling. With several selectable drive modes and customizable settings activated via steering-wheel-mounted buttons, the X6 M also offers adjustable brake-pedal feedback for a truly personalized driving experience.

0–60-MPH Times

2026-BMW-X6-M-8

The BMW X6 M accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in a rapid 3.7 seconds, according to BMW’s official specifications. When equipped with the optional M Drivers Package, the X6 M can reach a top speed of 177 mph. Without this package, the top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

Towing and Payload Capacity

The X6 M offers a towing capacity of up to 7,200 pounds, making it suitable for hauling trailers and boats. Its payload capacity stands at approximately 1,000 pounds, accommodating additional cargo without compromising performance.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Although the EPA has yet to release fuel economy data for the 2026 BMW X6 M, the 2025 model received estimates of 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway, which are identical to the estimates for the X5 M. Since we haven’t had the opportunity to test either M SUV on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route—part of our comprehensive testing process—we cannot offer an assessment of their real-world efficiency at this time. However, we will update this information once testing is complete. For more details on the X6 M’s fuel economy, be sure to check the EPA’s official website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside the X6 M, sportiness and luxury blend effortlessly, with carbon-fiber accents and standard leather upholstery adding to the vehicle’s premium appeal. The cabin is packed with cutting-edge technology, highlighted by a sweeping curved center display that seamlessly connects the digital gauge cluster with the infotainment system’s touchscreen. The interior is further enhanced with features such as ambient lighting, available massaging front seats with heating and ventilation, rear heated seats, heated and cooled cup holders, and more.

In terms of storage, the X6 M offers practical solutions, including a coverable bin beneath the center stack and a useful center-console bin. While the coupe-like roofline doesn’t compromise comfort for front or rear passengers, it does impact rear visibility and reduces cargo space. Despite these trade-offs, the X6 M still maintains a sophisticated balance of style, comfort, and practicality.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

At the heart of the X6 M’s interior is the impressive 27.2-inch curved display, which features a 12.3-inch digital display for the driver, seamlessly connected to the infotainment touchscreen. Powered by BMW’s latest iDrive software, the system offers a range of controls, including hand gestures, voice commands, and a center-console-mounted rotary controller, allowing for intuitive interaction.

Standard features are comprehensive, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a premium Harman Kardon sound system. For audiophiles seeking an even more immersive experience, an optional 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system is available, taking the audio experience to the next level.

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The BMW X6 M is equipped with a wide array of driver-assistance technology, ensuring enhanced safety and peace of mind for all passengers. Standard features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a unique Maneuver Assistant, which can store and replicate vehicle movements, even in reverse. This feature can also be controlled via the driver’s smartphone. For more detailed information on crash-test ratings, drivers are encouraged to visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

    Key safety features include:

    • Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
    • Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
    • Available adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology

    Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

BMW’s warranty and maintenance coverage for the X6 M is comparable to that of its competitors, such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz, though it offers superior complimentary scheduled maintenance compared to both brands. However, it doesn’t quite match the level of coverage provided by Jaguar.

    • Limited Warranty: Covers four years or 50,000 miles
    • Powertrain Warranty: Covers four years or 50,000 miles
    • Complimentary Maintenance: Covered for three years or 36,000 miles
