2025 Tesla Model Y – Overview
The 2025 Tesla Model Y stands out for offering one of the longest estimated driving ranges among electric SUVs, making it an appealing choice at first glance. Yet, closer inspection reveals some drawbacks: the cabin feels less refined than competitors, and certain build-quality issues can diminish its initial appeal. Sharing much of its underpinnings with the recently refreshed Model 3 sedan—which addressed many of these concerns—the Model Y is expected to receive similar upgrades for the 2026 model year. Until then, the current Model Y is available in three versions: Long Range RWD, Long Range AWD, and Performance, each offering different ranges and acceleration capabilities.
When Is the 2025 Tesla Model Y Coming Out?
Tesla has scheduled the 2025 Tesla Model Y for release in late Q1 2025, with deliveries expected to start shortly after production ramps up. Availability will first focus on key markets in North America, Europe, and Asia, with global distribution expanding later in the year.
What’s New for 2025 Tesla Model Y?
For 2025, Tesla has discontinued the previously offered Standard Range battery pack. Aside from this change, the Model Y remains largely unchanged this year. A more extensively updated version is scheduled to debut with the 2026 model.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The 2025 Tesla Model Y starts at $46,630 and rises to $53,130, depending on the chosen trim and optional features. Your ideal choice depends on whether you prioritize maximum range, all-wheel drive, or sporty performance.

When it comes to electric vehicles, driving range is key. The Long Range RWD and Long Range AWD models deliver up to 337 miles and 311 miles of range, respectively. We recommend the Long Range RWD with its single-motor rear-wheel-drive setup, as it provides the maximum range. Customization options for the Model Y are limited, and while there are several exterior colors available, most come at an additional cost.
EV Motor, Power, and Performance
The 2025 Tesla Model Y lineup begins with the Long Range RWD, featuring a single electric motor that produces 295 horsepower. For driving enthusiasts, the Long Range AWD and Performance models are more appealing, thanks to dual motors that boost combined horsepower and provide all-wheel drive.
While the Model Y delivers impressive acceleration, it doesn’t quite match the driving thrill of the Model 3. Its SUV body raises the center of gravity, which softens the sharp handling of its sedan sibling. Additionally, the Model Y’s ride tends to be noticeably firmer over rough or uneven roads.
0–60-MPH Times
With help from a generous HARJA, we tested a 384-hp Long Range AWD Model Y, which reached 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds—only 0.4 second slower than our long-term Model 3 sedan. The Performance model was even quicker, hitting 60 mph in 3.6 seconds during our testing.
Towing and Payload Capacity
The 2025 Tesla Model Y can tow up to 3,500 pounds, though a towing hitch is not included as standard on any trim and must be added as an option.
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
The EPA estimates the Long Range RWD 2025 Tesla Model Y can travel up to 337 miles per charge, while the Long Range AWD reaches 311 miles. The Performance model’s range drops to 277 miles due to its sportier setup.
In real-world testing at 75 mph, the Long Range AWD managed 220 miles, and the Performance model achieved 230 miles. The Performance trim benefits from 20-inch wheels, a lowered suspension, a higher top speed of 155 mph, faster claimed acceleration, and a dedicated Track mode, which partly explains the difference in real-world efficiency.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe
The EPA estimates the Long Range RWD 2025 Tesla Model Y achieves 125 MPGe city and 117 MPGe highway, while the Performance model is rated at 104 MPGe city and 97 MPGe highway.
In our 200-mile highway test, the Long Range AWD recorded 94 MPGe, and the Performance model delivered 98 MPGe. (MPGe stands for miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent, an EPA metric used to estimate fuel efficiency for EVs and PHEVs.) For more detailed fuel-economy information, visit the EPA’s website.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Unlike the larger Model X, the Model Y does not feature Falcon Wing doors. Its interior is minimalistic, with few physical buttons and a large central infotainment display dominating the uncluttered dashboard. A heavily tinted, all-glass roof adds an airy, open feel to the cabin.
An optional third row is available for $2,500, but it’s best suited for children, as the two seats are cramped and cannot comfortably accommodate adult passengers.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Nearly every function in the 2025 Tesla Model Y—from climate controls to the speedometer—is accessed through the large, slim infotainment display at the center of the dashboard. Like the Model 3, the Model Y comes loaded with entertainment options, including built-in Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube apps, as well as a selection of video games—perfect for passing the time while charging at public stations. Tesla ensures safety by restricting access to these features while the vehicle is in motion.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The 2025 Tesla Model Y comes standard with Tesla’s Autopilot driving-assist system. Despite its name, Autopilot is not a fully self-driving feature, and the optional Full Self-Driving Capability also requires the driver’s attention and potential intervention at all times. That said, these systems are valuable for reducing fatigue during long highway journeys. For detailed crash-test results, refer to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.
Key safety and driver-assistance features include:
-
Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
-
Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
-
Standard adaptive cruise control with lane-centering capability
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
The 2025 Tesla Model Y warranty matches that of Tesla’s other vehicles, including the Model 3, Model S, and Model X. It provides four years or 50,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage, while the battery and electric motors are covered for eight years or 100,000 miles. Tesla does not offer complimentary scheduled maintenance.
